이미 한국과 일본을 비롯한 아시아권에서는 언론 보도와 서적 출간을 통해 핀란드에 관한 다양한 이야기들이, 과장해서 말하면, 홍수처럼 쏟아져 나왔다. 이 책을 준비하면서 우리 역시 어쩌면 또 하나의 거품을 더하는 격이 될지 모르겠다는 우려를 했다. 그래서 마치 ‘한국의 대표 음식은 불고기’라는 식의 한정된 시각과 얕은 정보만의 단편적 모습을 기술하는 것을 최대한 피하려고 노력했다. 단순한 문화 비교나 문화적 편견 혹은 숭배의 함정에 빠져 또 하나의 핀란드 찬양 서적을 출간하는 것은 우리가 목적하는 바가 아니다. 따라서 우리는 사회·문화·교육 등 전체를 아우르는 통합적인 시각을 유지하고자 했다. 우리는 헬싱키에서 오늘을 살고 있는 이웃들과 동료들, 친구들의 이야기와 모습을 이방인의 시선에 담아 기록하였다. 우리는 우리의 낯선 시선을 다양한 방면에서 이 책에 담아보고자 했다. 객관적이며 정확한 정보 전달을 바탕으로, 조금은 더 생동감을 더해줄 것을 기대하며, 우리의 학교 및 일상생활, 그리고 일터에서 체험한 우리의 이야기도 이 책에 담았다. 헬싱키에 공동 농장이 만들어진 이후 텃밭을 분양받고자 하는 사람들은 매년 늘어났고, 대기자가 수천 명에 이르자 더 이상 공공기관의 힘만으로는 수요를 충당하기 어려워졌다. 이에 한 환경단체가 매우 기발한 대안을 제시했다. 1995년에 설립된 핀란드의 비영리 환경 단체 ‘도도(Dodo)’가 바로 그 주인공이다. 도도는 즐겁고 친환경적인 도시를 만들고자, 2009년에 ‘게릴라 가드닝’이라는 프로젝트를 시작했다. 이 프로젝트는 ‘게릴라’라는 말 그대로 어느 한 지역에서 계속 농사를 짓는 것이 아니라, 일시적으로 사용하지 않는 땅을 활용하여 농사를 짓는 것이었다. 우리 부부가 만난 모든 핀란드인들은 세금에 대해 모두 한목소리를 냈다. 즉, ‘세금을 줄이는 것에 반대한다’는 것이다. 세금을 적게 내고 더 많은 자본을 자신의 손에 쥐고 싶은 게 일반적인 인간의 심리가 아닐까? 세금이 직접적으로 복지의 질을 향상시킨다고 믿는 핀란드인들에게 적은 세금은 보편적 복지를 약화시키는 주범으로 여겨진다. 따라서 대부분의 핀란드인들은 세금을 줄이는 것에 찬성하지 않는다. (71쪽)
나는 당시 한국도 피사에서 2위를 차지했기에 어느 정도 자부심을 느끼며 어깨를 나란히 하고픈 마음이 있었다. 그런데 이런 나의 속마음도 몰라주고, 그들은 등수에 민감하지 않은 나라에서 교육받은 탓인지, 아니면 3회 연속 상위권을 휩쓸고 나니 여유가 생긴 탓인지, 해외 여론의 호들갑과는 달리 담담한 반응을 보였다. 한편 핀란드가 1위, 한국이 2위를 차지한 2006년 피사 결과가 발표된 후 한국 언론에 재미있는 기사가 소개되었다. 한국의 교육 관계자가 핀란드 관계자를 만나 “허허, 근소한 차이로 저희가 졌습니다.”라고 말을 건네자, 상대 핀란드인이 “저희가 큰 차이로 앞섰습니다. 핀란드 학생들은 웃으면서 공부하지만, 그쪽 학생들은 울면서 공부하지 않습니까?”라고 응답했다는 내용이었다. 생활 패턴을 여유롭게 바꾸고 그에 따른 만족을 추구하는 사람들을 다운시프트(downshift)족이라고 한다. 이들은 돈을 적게 벌더라도 스트레스를 덜 받는 생활 방식으로 삶의 속도를 늦추며 사는 사람들이다. (……) 그들의 주거 양식은 도시에서 산다는 것의 의미를 다시 한 번 생각해보게 했다. 에너지 절약을 실천하고 각자의 방법으로 환경문제에 접근하며, 지속 가능한 삶과 사회에 깊은 관심을 보여주었다. 도시의 농업과 주거지 주변 공원의 중요성도 언급했다. 가구들은 대부분 주워오거나 재활용하여 직접 만들었고, 공통적으로 모든 집에 텔레비전이 없었다. 다른 유럽 국가들처럼 핀란드에서도 반려동물을 사고파는 행위는 쉽사리 찾아보기 힘들다. 이들은 반려동물은 돈으로 사거나 팔 수 있는 존재가 아니라고 생각하기 때문이다. 이들이 함께 지내는 반려동물은 대개 동물 보호소에서 입양해 온 것이거나, 친구나 지인을 통해 분양받은 것이다. 미셸은 처음 한국에 왔을 때 쇼윈도 뒤편에 갇힌 작은 강아지들을 보고 충격을 받았다고 했다. 미셸은 많은 반려동물과 함께 자랐지만, 단 한 번도 돈을 주고 사본 적이 없다고 했다. 대부분 시어머니의 친구들로부터 반려견을 분양받거나, 떠돌이 고양이를 데려다 기르거나 했다. 그렇기 때문에 한국의 상업화된 펫숍은 미셸에게 놀라운 문화적 차이로 다가왔던 것이다. -you posted a Return request within 24 hours of payment and your order is still under “Pending” status (if your order is under “Queued for Shipment” status, please contact our customer service center) or
-the order is delayed for more than 10 days since payment and you have not received any notification regarding the delay; or
-the ordered item is out of stock.
2) We accept return(s) if:
-you receive a product different from your order; or
-you receive a defective product.
**Return Instructions
(1) Post a return request on our Return forum within three days of receipt. You are required to attach the photos of the received product(s) and include the item code, the order number, and the reason for the return.
(2) A customer service representative will be in contact to assist you by email or phone.
(3) Items returned must be in their original condition, which includes tags and any packaging. Also, you need to include a note of your order number, name, and user ID.
*Please be advised that returns are accepted ONLY IF you followed the instructions above and your return request has been approved by our staff. Returns that are shipped to us without any prior consent are not accepted.
*Please note that EVEN the defective/incorrect item(s) must be returned with all of the tags and labels intact. The item(s) must be sent in their original packaging and unworn.
*Please include all contents of the original package and free gifts (if applicable) in your return packaging.
* Shipping fee for any return caused by our fault will be paid by the company. However, if EMS’ cash on delivery is not possible then you can scan the return receipt and either mail it with the item to return or post an image of it on the forum. The shipping fee will be refunded once the returned item has arrived.

-you are returning the items just because you changed your mind (on size, color, etc.)
-you are returning shoes, bags, or any other accessories
-the products are damaged due to your mishandling
